BSP Masterplanning was engaged to prepare an urban design strategy for the residential component of a wider regeneration scheme.
The aim was to create an attractive walkable residential neighbourhood using the new design guidance set out in Manual for Streets. The urban design strategy proposed the extension of existing street patterns and identified the opportunity to create a central ‘Nature Park’ that would transform the existing Wade Brook into an attractive landscape feature for both existing and new residents.
The design incorporated a series of perimeter blocks with internal garden areas and avoided the use of parking courts by providing on-street parking within a hierarchy of streets.
A series of character areas were identified which would allow for a variety of architectural treatments to be explored within a legible framework. Consideration was also given to helping resolve car parking problems in the neighbouring historic residential area by providing a public parking square overlooked by surrounding properties.
